Camera angles/Disabilty clip

Camera angles in Disability clip

The begin of the clip begins with a bird’s eye view of the bedroom in which Ben and David share, the bird eye view of the bedroom gives an overall shots of the scenery and sets the scene so we get a feel for what type of clip it’s going to be about. The shot signifies to the audience the difference of lifestyle the brothers have, although they share a bedroom together and should therefore express similar lives we are shocked to be shown the complete opposite of what a ‘typical nuclear family’ would have, the lack of colour and dullness which is conveyed in Bens half the bedroom conotating a sense of anger and neglection, however Ben’s half of his bedroom is filled with colour and happiness suggesting his childish behaviour and perhaps the sense his parents give him more than what they do David. We go on to see a mid-shot/panning on David, demonstrating the framing of the subject from the waist up while the camera moves around him discusses the facial expressions and emotions in which David feels, you get a sense that he is the main character as he sets the scene of stating ‘he wants to kill his brother’ rather than just a close up on David being shown his facial expressions from every angle emphasises the reader to feel sympathy towards him.

The ‘zoom’ camera angel used next is created by zooming into the object/person it creates an effect to make you begin to understand the story line through Ben’s eyes, understanding his perspective of the situation which is reflected by him looking like such an innocent and harmless character, we question why his brother hates him so much when he appears to be so gentle and kind. Carrying on the director of the clip uses an establishing shot which establishes the scene, often giving information about where the scene is set which in this scenario displays the lack of money that the family have, helping to emotionally attaches you to them by feeling upset by the lack of money which they clearly have. The extreme close up showing the facial expressions of Ben conveys his disability to the audience through the way he acts/eats his breakfast – you question why his brother is so angry at him when it’s not his fault he suffers with the disability in which he has.

Over the shoulder shots are used to look at another character by peering over someone else, in this situation in the clip it would suggest the power in which David holds over his brother – he doesn’t go through the same struggles that his brother does and yet still can’t find sympathy as his brother to express emotion to him. The over the shoulder shot goes straight into a high angle shot where the camera angle is directed by looking down on another object suggesting the hierarchy status from David to his brother – the wide shot used is conveyed by showing everyone in the scene, as David stands over his brother looking down on him while he speaks suggests power once again. In the middle of the table Ben sits which would connotate his status in the family and the protection over him, he’s the centre of attention and everyone around him is his career.
